I (Frankie) love Tony Horton. For those of you who don't have a clue who he is, let me enlighten you. He is a fitness guy. He is my fitness crush guy. He did the P90X workout videos and has since done a whole slew more workout videos. You may still not have a clue who he is, but that's okay. What I want you to know about him is his motto which is, "Do your best and forget the rest".
The first time I heard him say this I thought, yeah, whatever. He doesn't mean that because he really wants me to do all 150 of these damn squats and if I do my best and forget the rest I'll only get in about 20 and he's going to be pissed. What I didn't realize was he wouldn't have been pissed. Not if 20 squats was truly my very best. He means it when he says, do your best and forget the rest. But, he also means to really do your best. Don't half ass it and pretend that's your best. Give it all you've got and when you have nothing left to give, then you can forget the rest.
I think we have to apply that motto to all aspects of our lives. I'm a perfectionist and used to, if I couldn't get it perfect, I felt like I failed. After years of applying Tony's motto to my life, I can now feel good if something isn't perfect as long as I know I gave it everything I had. If a client asks me to research the best nude beaches in Southwest Florida and I Google Nude Beaches in Southwest Florida and don't get any results and go back to the client and say, "Sorry, I couldn't find anything", then that's not my best. If I take it a few steps further and look for nude beaches in all of Florida and then ask my client how far they are willing to travel and still can't find anything within that distance, then I've given it my best and can feel good about telling the client I couldn’t' find anything.
My point (I'm not sure how we started talking about nude beaches) is if you've truly given it your best shot then you can feel good about the outcome. Don't beat yourself up if it isn't perfect; know you've done your best and now you can forget the rest.
I still can't do 150 squats, but I can do a lot more than 25, and I feel good when I stop because I know I've done my best. Wait, that's a lie. I don't feel good when I stop. My damn legs hurt, but those legs will look good on that nude beach when I find it and I can lay there and forget the rest because I know I've done my best.
I love you Tony!
Frankie and Andrea take turns sharing stories. Just good talk over a cup of coffee.
