Four Ways to Stay Healthy Working From Home

When you begin working from home, it’s exciting.  Hooray!  I’m home.  I can relax, enjoy myself and get my work done, all without having to hop in the car.  You feel great!  But then, as the days and weeks go by, you find that energized feeling being replaced with a little bit of laziness.  And perhaps a little bit of indulgence. I can eat that whole bag of Doritos and no one can stop me.  You start wearing hats to hide your dirty hair, and sweatpants are your business casual (and it’s business casual every day).

When you find yourself falling into this slump, it can start to take a toll on your health.  In order to stay healthy, you need to continually care for yourself in body, mind and spirit.  Here are four easy ways to keep your health up when you work from home.

Get Up and Boogie
Come on - you have to move.  You cannot possibly sit in front of a computer all day.  Or the TV.  Or staring out the window.  Start your day with exercise, even if it’s just some stretching.  Stand up and walk around every hour (at least).  Put on some music and jump around.  (Katrina and the Waves Walkin’ on Sunshine can get anyone’s toes a-tapping!).  Get up and boogie and your body will be thankful for it.

Love Your Office
Whether you’re in a separate room, a desk in the corner of the living room or the basement, you need to create a positive environment that will motivate you and make you feel great to do work.  It’s your office.  Add some plants to freshen the air, some beautiful artwork to motivate you, some soothing music.  Create a wonderful space to work in.

Clean Up!
Get up, take a shower, get dressed.  If you ever have to think, When did I take a shower last?, it’s been way too long.  Start the day fresh and clean.  You never know when someone will show up at your door, or if you have to go to school to pick up the kids, or just head out in public.  Stay clean.  Your body and your family will appreciate it.

Ditch the Junk Food
Now, if you wave a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos in my face, you can be sure I’ll grab a few handfuls, but that’s not a lunch - or breakfast, either.  Keep some amazing snacks on hand that are going to do your body good.  Nuts, fruit, veggies.  Put on a big pot of tea, or treat yourself and get one of those bottles that infuses water with fruit slices of your choosing.  Treat yourself like you’re being served lovely, healthy snacks at a spa.
