Last week Andrea shared a story about retro technology and how it made her feel stupid. This week in our #letsmakeitpersonal post, I (Frankie) am going to share my own story about retro technology and how it made me feel like a complete idiot the other day.
My husband and I were watching the new show on Netflix, Stranger Things. Yes, I'm a Netflix addict. Anyway, I won't spoil anything because there may be some people out there who've yet to watch it, but it's set in the 80s. That was my time guys. I loved the 80s. I was young and free and stupid, but I didn't care. I was a glorious teenager. I didn't worry about car payments or mortgages or any of that stuff. I was happy!
Anyway, on this show this one kid stays home from school. The mom comes to his room and is fussing because he will be home alone because she is going to run some errands. She is a stay at home mom, but has to go out to do a few things. She tells the kid that if he needs anything to "call your dad at work".
Now, my mind kind of just froze when she said this. I couldn't process it at first. What? Why did he have to call his dad at work? She wasn't working. Why couldn't he just call her? What was this woman thinking? You want him to bother his dad at work when you're just running to the grocery store and maybe take a casserole to the neighbor? Why can't he just call you if he needs something? Oh…it's the 80s…no cell phones.
I was going to keep it to myself, but I just couldn't so I told my husband. It was a good laugh and a good reminder on how dependent even us 80s kids have become on modern technology.
I miss the time when I could leave the house and not feel like I have to take a phone with me. Do you? We'd love to know if you would like to maybe go back to the good old days when technology hadn't yet invaded every aspect of our lives.
Frankie and Andrea take turns sharing stories. Just good talk over a cup of coffee.
