More specifically, I scream for chocolate soft serve ice cream in a cone. Why do I (Frankie) scream for it? Because no one serves it! I don't think it's always been like this. I've only found one place anywhere close to me that serves soft serve CHOCOLATE ice cream in a cone. What in the world is going on? When did this happen?
I know I can't be the only person who wants chocolate ice cream. Not everyone's favorite is vanilla, is it? I had one place tell me they could serve it to me in a cup, but not a cone. What? Is that a joke? It wasn't. They could give me chocolate soft serve ice cream in a cup, but not a cone and I have no idea why. It didn't make sense then and it doesn't make sense now. I do know that I won't go back to that place for anything ever again because that's just a way of doing business that doesn't process with me at all.
Here's the point; if you are going to offer a service, have a little variety. Not everyone is going to want things done the same way or want just vanilla ice cream in a cone. Be okay with that. Be a little flexible. The purpose of any business, whether you're doing data entry working from home, or serving ice cream at a drive through, is to make the customer happy. How can you make everyone happy if you do everything the same way and can never be flexible? Maybe you have a client that likes data entered one way, but another client likes it entered totally opposite? Are you going to tell one of them that you can't do the work because you only enter data one way? What if I don't like vanilla ice cream? Where does that leave me? A very unhappy customer is where it leaves me.
Just be flexible. Be willing to work with people and maybe go outside your box a little. You can make more people happy that way and you'll gain lots more loyal clients when they know you're willing to work WITH them and sometimes do things differently than normal because it's how the person who is paying you wants it done. We have to take a step back sometimes to remember that even when we own our own business, we're still working FOR someone and our way isn't always exactly the way they want or need something done.
And if someone wants chocolate soft serve ice cream in a cone, for the love of chocolate lovers everywhere, please give them chocolate soft serve ice cream in a cone.
