If you live in one of the parts of the country where winter lasts a while like I (Andrea) do, you find yourself with a lack of yummy produce. Here in Michigan you have to learn to switch over from lots of greens and reds to lots of root veggies and tasty things like that. But the quality? Ugh. It sucks.
All of my grocery stores (national chains) have really lackluster produce now. And each day I take a trip to the store, I walk in, I see the sad state of produce, and I get angry at how crappy it all looks and then I just grab a bag of frozen whatever. I settle.
Why do I settle? Because I’m lazy. Because, if I hop in my car right now, I’m about a 3 minute drive to Kroger. So it’s easy, and even though the produce looks blah, I’ll go because it’s there.
But settling is wrong. It kills your will to do more. To do better. To be better.
About a 20 minute drive away is Papa Joe’s Market. It’s completely local and I think they have four stores in the area. This is quality. This is better. This is inspiration.
When I take the drive to Papa Joe’s, I am inspired to cook more. To cook great things. To try new things. Why? Because they are exceptional. They have amazing produce (not to mention fish, wine, etc.). They give a damn to offer the best. I have literally seen workers sorting through the green beans to pull out anything that wasn’t of quality.
When I’m there, I’m surrounded by quality and it elevates me. It makes me want to do better. To cook better. To be healthier. To be better.
We need to do this in everything we do. We need to surround ourselves with the best in order to inspire us to do more. Now, I’m not saying you have to go out and buy a Rolls Royce and a mansion. It’s not about spending money. It’s about putting yourself in an environment that pushes you to succeed. How much more successful are you in a fitness class with others than when you’re trying to do something alone? How can you learn more about your business and learn to grow it if you spend your time with people who have never owned a business?
Get out there and surround yourself with exceptional people that will inspire you to do exceptional things. Quality counts.
Frankie and Andrea take turns sharing stories. Just good talk over a cup of coffee.
