I (Andrea) am lazy. No, let me do that again. I am a poor exerciser. :) How about that? It’s not that I don’t like to exercise. It’s just that I find it to be horribly boring and even scrubbing toilets is more exciting to me.
But, that’s no excuse to not exercise and to not want to be healthy. Because #HealthMatters. Especially when you work from home. Because home is where the comfy couch is. And your pajamas are. And the treats are! And it’s easy to not be healthy at home.
So for the past several weeks now, I have gotten into a fantastic routine to start my day in a healthier way. They say it typically takes about 30 days to get a habit going, and I’m there. It’s not a big thing, but it’s something that I can do now. And maybe in another month I’ll be able to do more.
At the same time every morning, when the house is quiet and the hustle and bustle of the world hasn’t yet started, I stroll into the living room ready to exercise. Exercising at the same time each day is critical. Put it on your calendar. Set an alarm on your phone. Make it part of your routine.
I put on the TV. For me, TV is a great distraction to watching the clock, waiting for exercise time to be over. (Yes, I’d rather be working at my computer than exercising!) At first I’d watch/go along with exercise videos, but that got a little boring. Now I put on….wait for it. Parking Wars. Yeah, it’s in reruns on...I don’t even know what channel. But it’s a funny show, and it makes my exercise time just fly by. So, watch something you’ll be engaged in.
When I exercise, I stretch first. Just slow, quiet stretching. Even my cat Othello will lay down at my head and stretch a bit, too. (Of course, he’ll put his claws on my head sometimes to get a good grip! YOW!) After I stretch, I step. In place, or around and back and forth, or whatever mood I happen to be in to keep moving. I’ve got a shoulder injury right now so I’m limited to what I can do right now, but I keep moving.
When you work from home, you tend to sit around a lot. My work has me sitting at my computer for hours and hours. So to have this morning routine to stretch and move and get my blood flowing - it’s critical.
If you’re working from home, you must get a regular exercise routine going, and we really believe you should start your day with it. It’s going to give you energy, and it’s going to give you a special “me” time that you won’t likely get after you’ve been through a whole day of work, and taking care of your family, and taking care of yourself.
Start with a routine of taking care of yourself first, so you have the energy to take care of everyone else.
Let me know your favorite exercise. I’m always looking for new things to do each morning!
Frankie and Andrea take turns sharing stories. Just good talk over a cup of coffee.
